Biography

Born in Ankara in 1988, Cem Babacan quickly distinguished himself as one of Turkey’s most promising pianists. His international career began in 2007, when he won first prize at the Yves Nat International Piano Competition in France and was subsequently invited to perform his debut European recital at the International Serignan Piano Festival. The following year, he appeared at New York’s prestigious Steinway Hall, and in the same season received the Yamaha Scholarship Award.

Babacan completed his studies at Hacettepe University State Conservatory with top honors, graduating first in both his department and faculty. He was then accepted to the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he studied under Alexander Mndoyants and his assistant Ekaterina Mechetina. During his four years of training, he achieved remarkable success, winning first prizes at the 2nd National Kamuran Gündemir Piano Competition (2011), the 1st National Hacettepe University Piano Competition (2012), and the Gümüşlük A.A. Saygun Piano Competition (2013). In 2014, he added a third prize at the Puigcerda Piano Competition in Spain to his accolades. He graduated from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in 2012 with the institution’s highest distinction, the “red diploma.”

Babacan has performed in renowned venues such as Konzerthaus (Berlin), Tonhalle (Zurich), Steinway Hall (London), Rachmaninov Hall and Small Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, Paris’s 3rd District Concert Hall, Lausanne’s Renens Municipality Concert Hall, and Auditorium Monceau Assurances de Vendome (France). His festival appearances include Festival Classics (Switzerland), Young Euro Classics (Germany), Les Amis De La Musique En Vendomois, Antalya Piano Festival, Bodrum Gümüşlük International Classical Music Festival, and the IKSEV International Izmir Festival.

As a soloist, he has collaborated with numerous orchestras, including the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester, Presidential Symphony Orchestra, Turkish National Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Ankara Youth Symphony Orchestra, Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra, Karşıyaka Municipality Chamber Orchestra, Hacettepe University Symphony Orchestra, Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Symphony Orchestra, Izmir State Symphony Orchestra, Bursa Regional Symphony Orchestra, Antalya State Symphony Orchestra, Filarmoni Antalya, Orkestra Akademik Başkent, Gazi Youth Chamber Orchestra, and the Mersin Opera Orchestra.

Currently, Cem Babacan serves as a faculty member at Maltepe University Conservatory in Istanbul. He is also a member of London’s “Keyboard Charitable Trust” and continues to pursue an active career with concerts and projects both in Turkey and abroad.
