Vakhtang Kakhidze, the world-renowned conductor and composer of the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra, gained attention with his 2021 work Requiem. The composition is described as a profound musical reflection on death and loss.
Requiem blends the classical requiem tradition with Georgian musical culture and includes sections written for chorus, soloists, and orchestra. It was first performed on November 18, 2023, at the Queen Elisabeth Hall in Antwerp during the Europalia-Georgia festival. This concert at the Ankara Music Festival marks the work's second performance outside Georgia.
Kakhidze has stated that he approached the work out of a personal inner necessity, saying: "Not every composer can write a requiem; to do so, one must have experienced death and loss deeply."
