Biography

Born in Miami in 1956, began his musical journey on drums before turning to bass at age 12. By high school he had embraced the acoustic bass and chose music over football, later studying at the University of Miami. There he met alto saxophonist Bobby Watson, forming a lasting partnership and co-founding the New Note label. He also studied under Lucas Drew of the Miami Philharmonic.

In 1979, Betty Carter invited Lundy to join her trio, launching his professional career in New York. His work with Carter deeply shaped his musical philosophy, teaching him both the power of swing and the emotional depth of ballads. Lundy went on to collaborate with major jazz figures including Art Blakey, Johnny Griffin, Freddie Hubbard, Pharoah Sanders, and John Hicks.

Though his discography is relatively small, it includes Just Be Yourself, Beatitudes (with Bobby Watson), and the gospel project Walk With Me with the ARC Choir. His album Against All Odds features Roy Hargrove, Bobby Watson, John Hicks, and his sister Carmen Lundy. Known for leading ensembles with strength and subtlety, Lundy prioritizes groove and support for soloists over flashy virtuosity, affirming his role as a respected bassist and bandleader.
