The ballet opens with a quiet glimpse into Jeanne's world. Her peaceful life with family is disrupted by the sudden vision of an Angel. Shaken but inspired, she shares her divine calling, only to be questioned and humiliated by priests, nuns, and soldiers. Undeterred, she leaves home to meet Crown Prince Charles.
In the court, Jeanne secretly recognizes the future king hidden in the crowd and tells him of her visions. Moved by her conviction, the Crown Prince agrees to let her lead the French army.
After victory on the battlefield, the newly crowned King Charles VII betrays Jeanne. She is captured, tried, condemned, and brought to the stake. As the flames rise, her spirit is freed and the Angel carries her to the heavens in a moment of serenity and exaltation.
